NSC is honored to present the regional premiere of one of the most groundbreaking musicals of our generation, the 2004 Tony Award-winning Broadway musical Caroline, or Change, featuring a book and lyrics by Pulitzer Prize-winner Tony Kushner (Angels in America, A Bright Room Called Day, Munich) and music by Jeanine Tesori (Thoroughly Modern Millie, Violet). Race, rage and civil rights are at the heart of this acclaimed, deeply personal story. Drawn from Kushner's own Louisiana childhood, Caroline, or Change centers on Caroline Thibodeaux, a divorced, middle-aged African-American maid who works for a Jewish family in the suburban enclave of Lake Charles, Louisiana, in 1963. She finds herself in the middle of a family conflict when eight-year-old Noah Gellman's stepmother allows Caroline to keep any money she finds in the child's pockets while doing the laundry. The show's title references the poignant double meaning of the spare change Noah leaves behind and the vast social changes occurring in 1960s America. Originally commissioned as an opera, Caroline, or Change features a virtuosic, fully sung score by Jeanine Tesori. Blending rhythm and blues, Motown, gospel, klezmer and traditional Jewish melodies, Tesori's music provides the breathtaking medium for Kushner's provocative and powerful tale.  Directed by NSC Producing Artistic Director Alan Patrick Kenny.

“One of the best shows of the year.  The most ambitious new musical of New York City’s theater season.  Caroline is a breakthrough—a story so grounded in the ordinary details of life that it almost seems to have discovered a new genre.”

-Time

“Manna from heaven.  Caroline is, like Angels in America, ultimately a celebration of human fortitude, of the vast resources of love and hope that allow people of all backgrounds and belief systems to transcend hatred and despair.”
