NSC is proud to present the Cincinnati premiere of Richard Greenberg’s Tony Award-winning Best Play, the hot-button baseball comedy Take Me Out, which throws a curveball at America’s favorite pastime. Darren Lemming, a young, iconic baseball star, is at the top of his game both personally and professionally. When he calls a press conference that results in a shocking admission to the media, Lemming sends a ripple of effects through the team, the fans and the nation. Both hilarious and hard-hitting, Take Me Out strips baseball bare, exploring issues of celebrity, homophobia, race, and friendship. NSC welcomes Cincinnati Shakespeare Company’s Artistic Director Brian Isaac Phillips as guest director of Take Me Out, after his award-winning appearance in NSC’s The Goat last season.
“What an enchanting and enchanted take on baseball Mr. Greenberg has created…passionately personal and lyrically analytical. It’s a sensibility that is so smart, raw and sincere all at once that you may find tears in your eyes…an unconditional, all-American epiphany…to cherish.”
-The New York Times
“A heady, heartfelt and enormously appealing romance…Perhaps never in my theatergoing experience have I experienced such an overwhelming—and spontaneous—surge of affection sent across the footlights.”
-Variety
